Pimples are inflamed or raised spots on the surface of the skin, usually filled with pus. They are small pustules or papules. Pimples naturally develop when the sebaceous glands become clogged or infected, causing it to swell and fill with pus.

Nobody likes to have pimples on their faces, as it can be embarrassing and difficult to treat. That’s why a lot of people have tried to prevent getting pimples by taking care of their faces.

However, some have claimed that foods can cause pimples. In Nigeria, a lot of people believe that groundnut causes pimples. In this article, we will answer the question: does groundnut cause pimples?

Let’s begin by finding out what causes pimples.

Causes of pimples

What causes pimples?

Our skin pore contains sebaceous glands. These glands secrete sebum, which is an oily substance that lubricates the skin and hairs. [1]

Sebaceous glands are present in every skin pore on the body except the palms of your hands and soles of your feet. But there are more sebaceous glands on the face and scalp than anywhere on your body.

Sebaceous glands produce sebum in the pores, while new skin cells constantly grow out, and the outer layers of skin are being shed (dead skin cells).

When the dead skin cells are not shed, they remain in the pores and are stuck together by the sticky sebum, which blocks the skin pore to cause pimples.

To summarize all I’ve said, pimples occur when pores become blocked with sebum and dead skin. This usually leads to infection and inflammation. The reason why pimples affect some people more than others is not really known.

The factors that could cause skin pore blockage to include:

Puberty

As you reach puberty, your hormone production changes. This causes the sebaceous glands,m to become very active and secrete a lot of sebum. Thus, pimples are likely to occur during puberty and around menstruation, for females. [2]

Bacterial infection

Bacterial infections can also cause pimples. Where sebum and dead skin cells blocked the pore, this enhances the growth of harmful bacteria.

Other likely causes of pimples include yeast infection, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). And testosterone sensitivity.

Although many people have claimed that diet can cause pimples, there’s little or no medical evidence to support. Scientific studies have stated that foods might play little role in causing pimples.

Now, to the main question, does groundnut cause pimples? The plain answer is no.

First, groundnuts contain vitamin E, selenium, and antioxidants, which are all good for the skin. They also contain omega-3 fatty acids, healthy polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated fats, which are vital for key bodily functions. [3]

In fact, eating a groundnut can fight inflammation and maintain good skin moisture levels. [4]

It is not possible to say that groundnut causes pimples, as they are no medical evidence to back up that claim.
